Birchbox {May 2018} …

A couple of months ago I decided to treat myself to a little something. Nothing too big, just a little pick me up to land through the letter box that I could play with and maybe find some new products that I like. Because let’s face it I don’t have the time or loads of pennies to spend on tons of new product.  So I decided to subscribe to Birchbox and have so far recieved a couple of boxes. I enjoyed this months Birchbox May collection so much I thought I would share it with you.

I will add that as a woman rapidly approaching 40 years of age, these boxes probably feel like they are advertised to a much younger age group, but don’t be put off by that. The benefit is that some products come full size, you save a few pennies along the way, and some come as samples.

This means if I love something then I have the option to repurchase and if I don’t then it’s no biggie because I’m not wasting a load of product. I can pass them on to my daughter or anyone else who wants to give them a go and don’t feel out of pocket or wastefull. So far there isn’t anything I haven’t liked, and a couple of things I really want to repurchase, so it’s a win win without having to endure the hard sales pitch and social anxiety at the beauty counter in store!

And now the very instagramable May Birchbox!

Firstly the box itself just makes me happy, and each month has a new theme which I like a lot. This month is ‘Palm Leaves & Warm Breeze’ which is so apt with the glorious weather we have been having! I had no idea what would be in the box past a lip stain, which you could pick your preferred colour from ‘Steaming Red’ and ‘Amber Rose’. I received the ‘Steaming Red’ and have to say it is a really lovely colour, and lasts very well. Even in the office with all the talking and tea drinking.

Now this month I was supposed to receive 5 items, but one was missing. This could have been a massive faux pas on Birchboxes part, regardless when I got in touch they were very helpful and offered a different replacement product which is actually something I was looking to get anyway. Win win right?! This was the only black mark against this months box, but seeing as it was a charcoal activated deodorant that was missing I don’t feel too hard done by and ended up with a better product for me.

Back to the products!

Greenfrog Botanic Geranium & Peppermint Botanical Bodywash

I love the way this smells, but then I love peppermint scents anyway. Having used it in the shower just, I feel clean and fresh. There is such a good pay off with the fragrance too as it lasts past the shower, which so few do. It is also paraben free, organic, cruelty free, vegan and ideal for sensitive skin types. Being an eczema and psoriasis ridden family this may be an answer for all of us going forward, even the men folk in my life. The only thing to bear in mind with this is that because it is so natural in ingredients it doesn’t build a very good lather. It doesn’t mean it won’t get you sparkling clean, but it does mean it is kinder to your skin and the environment.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely, and it would be used by the whole family!

NUXE Aquabella ® Exfoliating Puryfying Gel

NUXE Aquabella ® Exfoliating Puryfying Gel

This was a nice product, soap free with natural micro-beads to help exfoliate the skin, but for me it just didn’t cut the mustard as well as my usually exfoliator. It might be better suited to my teen though, as her skin probably doesn’t need anything as heavy duty as mine. With it being paraben free too I don’t mind passing to her to have a go with, especially with her teen hormonal skin as it should help clean her skin without the nasties!

Would I buy it again? Not for me personally, but if it suits my daughters skin then yes I may well treat her to some more.

Eyko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner Pitch Black

I use a felt liner all the time, it is easy to apply and in most cases stays put all day. I am super picky with my eyeliners too. I like them to be jet black with a super fine nib so I have better control when applying it. For creating an everyday wear cat eye it was pretty spot on. This will likely become a mainstay in travel makeup kit due to its compact size, meaning I can grab it and go instead of trawling through my makeup stash for the few bits I need whilst travelling. I will say there is very good pay off with the colour, pitch black is an accurate description and I can do a very quick application without having to faff filling in the gaps.

Would I buy it again? As much as I like the liner and will be using it until it runs out, I still prefer my current felt liner which is a heck of a lot less than the £16 price tag for this. However if you wanted to splurge a little on a liner this is definitely the one I would recommend.

Eyko Fat Eye Stick Satin

I watched Kat from Does My Bum Look 40 over Instagram Live the other week, when she had a makeup artist do an everyday makeup look on her. She used a liquid shadow which looked amazing. So when my charcoal activated deodorant didn’t turn up and this was offered as an alternative replacement I of course didn’t even hesitate! This Eye Stick goes on like a dream, and the colour is beautiful. It is exactly what I was looking for. The crayon like application is easy and the colour is buildable. It does have a slight sparkle/sheen to it so be aware of that however for its versatility in being able to effortlessly transition from day to night I love it!

Would I buy it again? Heck yes in a heartbeat! It is lovely to apply, is a perfect neutral with a bit of extra something something and it means I can apply and get on with my day.

Doucce Luscious Lip Stain in Steaming Red

Doucce Lucious Lip Stain

I hate picking out new lipsticks. I procrastinate, cover my hand in lippies and still leave the shop with nothing in hand. I had hoped to get the Amber Rose, but I was not by any means disappointed with the Steaming Red. The application is smooth, and it dries to a velvety matt finish really quickly without going crumbly. The coverage is nice too, very even and one that would complement different skin tones. Even my English rose complexion. It lasted most of the day, and I am very hard wearing where lippie is concerned, so was impressed with how well this one coped.

Would I buy it again? Probably because it is pretty low maintenance, and is both versatile for day and evening looks.

I was really pleased with the products I got this month and cannot wait to see what drops on the mat next month. I do know there will be a full size Ella Eden compact eye shadow. If you would like to get your hands on May's Birchbox follow this link for  just £5 plus p&p, usually £10!
